The third Kwang-Hua forum held by the State Key Laboratory of Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering and the Research Institute of Structural Engineering and Disaster Reduction of Tongji University, started from Oct. 9th, 2010, in the Yifu building of Tongji University. Gracious remarks had been delivered in the opening ceremony by Prof. Zuyan Shen, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Prof. Lili Xie, Academician of CAE, and Prof. Yiyi Chen, Vice Principal of Tongji University.

In recent years, the sustainable development of civil engineering has become one of the focuses in research and engineering practice. This two-day forum was aimed at gathering the professional thoughts of international experts about this theme.

Nearly 51 experts from 9 countries/regions joined this forum. During this forum, the experts discussed in details by the form of keynote reports or group meetings about the following topics: the life-cycle and performance-based design in buildings, bridges and other infrastructures; environmental friendly materials and technologies in civil engineering; sustainable technologies and quality control methods in constructions; hazard prevention and reduction in civil engineering; maintains, monitoring and retrofits of existing structures (including the vibration monitoring, damage assessments, fragile damages and its retrofit); sustainable codes in civil engineering and the sustainable development of the education in civil engineering. The guests also had a chance to visit the campus of the Shanghai EXPO.
